Frankenstein: Annotated for Scientists, Engineers, and Creators of All Kinds (MIT Press, 2017)

A few years ago, when I was working on revising the chapter about Frankenstein from my never-finished book project, I decided I probably should update my citations of the novel from the 1990s Norton Critical Edition I'd been using. So I looked around for a more modern critical edition, specifically one that uses the 1818 first edition as its copytext (which I find more interesting than the 1831 version, which is what the Penguin Classics edition uses). I came across this one from the MIT Press, published for the bicentennial of Frankenstein in 2018, aimed—as the subtitle says—at "scientists, engineers, and creators of all kinds." 

What this means in practice is that the book contains footnotes by a whole team of annotators (almost fifty), as well as seven short essays. The annotations and essays focus not on, say, tracing literary allusions and sources or making connections to literary theory or explicating biographical references, like you might see in a Norton Critical Edition or a Penguin Classic, but highlighting issues of science and responsibility.

I updated my citations as I revised my chapter, but I also added the book to my reading list, figuring 1) I was curious about the project as a whole, and 2) you certainly can't read Frankenstein too many times. (Especially if you study nineteenth-century literature and science!) Over Christmas break, I finally got around to reading it. This was my third time reading the novel in its entirety, though over the years I've dipped in and out of it many times. Here I thus want to focus on the paratext and not the text... though I will say that rereading the novel made me very much conscious of how long it has been since I've taught it (over a decade), and I would love to do so again... I feel like at this point in my life, I could probably get a whole semester out of the one book! I am not sure where an opportunity exists for me to so that in the near future, though.

As I mentioned earlier, the annotations here focus on highlighting issues of science and social responsibility. Sometimes they do that by contextualizing the novel in the science and debates of its own time, but more often, I felt, they raise contemporary issues and then pose a lot of broad questions. I felt like overall they were probably intended to nudge undergraduates reading the novel in a college class into asking themselves questions that could provoke discussion.

I have two issues with this, and one I think isn't very fair to the project. This is that I actually don't think Mary Shelley was very interested in what we now think of as "science," because what we now think of as "science" was only just coming into existence at the time. This is something explained really well in, for example, Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison's Objectivity (2007) and Patricia Fara's Science: A Four Thousand Year History (2009), both of which explicate how it was in the nineteenth century when we came to understand science as its own epistemology with its own ethical commitments. Recall, of course, that there was no such figure as the "scientist" when Frankenstein was written! The annotations in the MIT Frankenstein treat the novel as representative of issues that didn't totally exist as the time it was written. Now, should an edition aimed at undergraduates delve into these distinctions? Almost certainly not to the extent of engaging with Daston and Galison or Fara, sure. But it's a distinction the novel itself draws: when Victor goes to university, he is frustrated that modern science focuses on "realities of little worth" (29). It classifies and organizes, and nothing else. What Victor wants are "chimeras of boundless grandeur" (29)... but he got those from alchemy, not science! So how can the novel be a critique of science when Victor's ambitions come from outside science?

I think it can, Shelley was clearly engaging with the ideas of the new approach to science, but I did feel like the MIT edition elided the distinctions that the novel itself was drawing when it discussed Victor's education. Even if Shelley didn't intend the novel to discuss "science" or "the scientist" as we now understand them, that doesn't prevent the novel from having something to say about them. Victor may not have been a scientist in 1818, but he certainly was one by 1900. Indeed, he is the scientist, the representation that precedes all others! It's an interesting evolution, but one that the annotations obscure more than they reveal I think. (Alfred Nordmann's essay does flag this up, but other than that, it doesn't come up much.)

But this might all be unfair as a critique; if the MIT edition spent a bunch of time explaining the history of science and drawing a distinction between pre- and post-Enlightenment epistemology, that probably would undermine its stated project of "reflect[ing] on how science is framed and understood by the public" and "contextualiz[ing] new scientific and technological innovations" (xi).

This leads me into my second point, though, which is that I felt like in their effort to accomplish this, the annotations often have a hectoring tone... and overlook a major aspect of what makes science "dangerous." They pose a lot of questions, but footnotes are just not a good space in which to develop interesting questions, they're too constrained. So the footnotes have this vibe of "did you think of consequences, STEM majors? well? well?" To tie into my previous point, the attempt to use the footnotes to critique science as an enterprise fails a bit because twenty-first-century science is so different from what Shelley was engaging with. For example, one footnote reads, "Mary adds the troubling notion that science itself—however based in rationality and a drive for human progress—may inadvertently create disruptions... which override the ability of society's institutions to contain them" (147n14). But where in this book has science ever claimed to be "based in rationality and a drive for human progress"? That's not a claim Victor ever made, that's not what underlies his ambitions at all, or even Walton's. Where does the novel ever engage with "society's institutions" and their attempts to control science? Victor is literally just a guy, there's no kind of engagement with the broader societal context of the scientific enterprise. Which is fine for Shelley, as such a thing was only just coming into existence when she wrote, but undermines the MIT edition's attempt to claim this is going on in the book. Elizabeth Bear's essay does point out that "any scientific utility in his [Victor's] work is of very little interest to him" (231); his motivations just aren't what we think of as scientific ones.

Moreover, there is huge problem with all the annotations' and some of the essays' discussions of science going too far... namely, they just seem to treat science 'going too far' as something that just happens, thanks to the hubris of scientists. For example, in Anne K. Mellor's otherwise strong essay at the end, she mentions "the ethical problems inherent in the most recent advances in genetics: the introduction of germ-line engineering through CRISPR-Cas9 techniques of DNA alteration and the current scientific possibility of producing what Victor Frankenstein dreamed of, a superhuman 'designer baby'" (244). But what Mellor (and most of the edition's other contributors) don't actually explain is 1) why are these things bad, and 2) why would people do these things if they are obviously bad. They just 1) take it as read that these things are bad, and 2) seem to think that scientists will go around doing bad things just because. (The essays are generally better about this than the annotations, presumably because they have more space; maybe the real moral of this edition is that it's impossible to squeeze thought-provoking complexity into short footnotes, or even long ones.)

The first is a bit annoying. What makes a "designer baby" bad? A couple generations ago, there was a panic about "test tube babies" when IVF came along... and IVF is totally normalized now. Are we just freaking out about the next thing that's "against nature" for a kneejerk reason?

But the second issue really grinds my gears, because it seems that why scientific discoveries or technological developments are "misused" is a huge blind spot in a lot of discussion of science or technology. Is it because scientists are just cackling manically, or because they're oblivious?

No, it's neither. In this volume, only Cory Doctorow gets it right, in his essay at the back. People don't just "misuse" technologies because they want to; they do it for power. Specifically, in our world, that usually ends up meaning state power or financial power. The problem with splitting the atom is that it was used by nations to exert dominion over other nations; the reason someone might make a "designer baby" is that someone else will pay for it. It's not really about science or technology at all, it's about neocolonialism and global capitalism. That's what we need to afraid of. But most of the writers and annotators here focus on the science and technology itself.

Doctorow's essay, "I've Created a Monster! (and So Can You)," does an excellent, accessible job of laying this out, on both the individual and societal level. "How the railroads were built was the result of individual and often immoral choices. How the railroads were used was the result of a collective choice made by all the people in your social network" (211-2). Being Doctorow, he uses social networks as his example of a technology that gets (mis)used for profit, but I like that because it's accessible and clear: "A service like Facebook was inevitable, but how Facebook works was not" (212). The same goes for nuclear technology or germ-line genetic editing or whatever technology you want to analogize to Frankenstein. Too many people making this book focus on the choices of individual scientists, when what's really at stake are the choices of individuals with financial or political power, and the choice of society when it comes to regulation. The warning of this MIT edition is aimed at the wrong audience; if we want to prevent the misuse of science, we don't need an edition annotated for "scientists, engineers, and creators of all kinds," we need an edition annotated for the military-industrial complex and venture capitalists.

I'm guessing they'd be even less likely to read it, though. 

(The other essay that I thought got it right was Jane Maienschein and Kate MacCord's "Changing Conceptions of Human Nature," which focuses on Victor's education moreso than the creature.)

Also, as far as being a critical edition goes, I was a bit frustrated that the book claims to have a "painstakingly line-edited and amended version of the original manuscript" prepared by Charles E. Robinson (xii)... with absolutely no explanation of what this means! I get this is aimed at STEM undergraduates not literary scholars, but surely a half-page "note on the text" would not have gone amiss so that (say) a literary scholar choosing to assign the text knows the provenance of the version they are assigning! A weird misstep, in my opinion; it's a minimal-effort thing that people who don't care can just skip, but people who do care very much need!

Teaching the Medical Humanities: Short Science Fiction

Previously I posted about designing my "Medical Humanties" course, which was themed around science fiction stories focusing on the future of medicine. Today, I want to talk about the sf stories I taught and what I did with them.

  • Daniel Keyes, "Flowers for Algeron" (1959). When I was prepping the class last summer, I also happened to read the 1966 novel Flowers for Algernon, which made me remember the original short story from 1959. About a low-IQ adult who goes through an experimental surgery to elevate his IQ, it is quite obviously all about the ethics of medicine! My first time teaching the class, I used it in my genetic engineering unit as a sort of metaphor for the issues of consent and identity raised by genetic engineering. But when I later read the papers by students who wrote about it, I felt I had really done the story a disservice by not actually meaningfully discussing disability! So I created a disability unit the following semester, and used the medical, social, and human rights models of disability as a way of discussing the story.
  • Sarah Pinsker, "Pay Attention" (2015). Expanding the disability unit meant I needed a second example of disability-focused piece of sf, otherwise I didn't have much of a unit! One thing I toyed with going from my first semester to my second was dropping Sinclair Lewis's Arrowsmith as my novel and replacing it with Sarah Pinsker's We Are Satellites (2021). This novel is about a brain implant called the "Pilot" that people can get to help them multitask more effectively; I decided not to make the change (I already had a bunch of Arrowsmith lesson plans, of course), but it did cause me to remember that Pinsker also wrote a couple short stories set in the world of We Are Satellites. "Pay Attention" is about a young woman with a mental disability whose Pilot enables her to obtain a military and medical career... but then one day it stops working. Like most of Pinsker's work, a great little story, and it let us talk about different aspects of disability than "Flowers."
  • Nancy Kress, "Invisible People" (2020). Moving "Flowers for Algernon" out of the genetic engineering unit meant I needed a second genetic engineering story as well. Looking backward through old blog posts, I found one I made about this story by Nancy Kress, where some parents who used a surrogate discover that their daughter was actually a victim of illegal genetic engineering. I think Kress's story is super clever, raising some interesting issues about less obvious uses of genetic engineering than "would you create a super-genius?", and focusing on some issues of identity and consent that were central to our class. The story ends in a debate that translated well to the classroom, and the story is thematically quite clever.
  • Manjula Padmanabhan, "Essence of Gandhi" (1997). As soon as I knew I was doing genetic engineering, I knew I wanted to do this story, which is about Western corporations exploiting the DNA of colonized peoples—I had, after all, published an article on it! Neither semester did my students enjoy it; even though it's just four pages, they found it confusing and alienating. Their loss, I guess. I still think it's clever! (Probably they didn't like it because the story is almost totally unmentioned on the Internet, and thus ChatGPT can't summarize it.)
  • Channing Ren, "Resurrection" (2020). I will admit to cheating: this is the first of four short stories I recycled from my life-extension class. Hey, it gave me over a week's worth of lesson plans! What is technological immortality, arguably, other than medicine taken to its utmost? In my second iteration of the course, I moved this to be the first one we read, as it's a useful story for discussing the project of science fiction (it's very easy to get), and it has the most kneejerk negative depiction of immortality.
  • Vanessa Fogg, "Traces of Us" (2018). This makes a good second immortality story, because like "Resurrection" it's about consciousness uploading, but it's much more positive, so it works against your assumptions. I will probably import this resequencing back into my immortality course. It also let me discuss "hard sf," of which I would argue it's the only example I taught in this course.
  • Will McIntosh, "Bridesicle" (2009). This story is about issues relating to a different technology of immortality, cryonics. Students this semester got very into my explanation of what's really going on with cryonics.
  • Paolo Bacigalupi, "Pop Squad" (2006). Lastly, we did genetic life extension. This semester, thanks to an episode of Radiolab I had coincidentally heard a week before teaching it, I leaned into some real issues of population explosion and decline; again, I'd like to import these concepts back into my immortality class. They really illuminated for me what I think Bacigalupi is up to in this story; it's about be estranged from the natural process of reproduction.
  • Sarah Pinsker, "Escape from Caring Seasons" (2018). The first time I taught the class, a couple students brought up AI as the technology they were most interesting in when it comes to the future of medicine, which made me belatedly think of this story from Pinsker's book Lost Places, where algorithms supercede doctors in a nursing home... not because AI has gone horribly wrong, though, but because it's working exactly as intended. I added the story to my syllabus the second time around. Pinsker thus became my only repeat author.
  • Cory Doctorow, "Radicalized" (2019). Right around the time I finished teaching the class for the first time, Luigi Mangione shot a health insurance executive; this caused someone to post on the printSF subreddit that "Cory Doctorow's story from Radicalized has come true," alerting me to the existence of this story, about how men whose loved ones have died because of denied insurance claims get radicalized in online forums and begin executing health insurance executives. I added it to the course pretty belatedly (after I had ordered my course packet!) for my second go run. It's a clever story, and let me talk about some important issues affecting American healthcare; students of course had lots of opinions about Luigi, so it taught well. Doctorow's blog post about the story is good reading.
  • Samantha Mills, "Rabbit Test" (2022). This Hugo Award–winning story is about medical implants being used by the state to monitor if women are pregnant. Popular with my students, especially the women, and I like Mills's point that any technology that allows you to better understand your own body also allows others to better control your own body. She powerfully links her future technology to the history of birth control and abortion. I taught it as a good example of China MiĆ©ville's dictum that sf isn't really about the future but the present.
  • Meg Elison, "The Pill" (2020). This is a disturbing novelette about a pill that makes you skinny... but has a 10% chance of killing you! Good for discussing if people's aversion to fatness is really about health; I paired it with concepts and background from Joan Jacobs Brumberg's The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls and Jeffrey Sobal's "The Medicalization and Demedicalization of Obesity" to discuss how obesity is viewed as either a medical issue one or an ethical one. (Thanks to my friend Christiana for her help.)

That's it! It was a fun class. I make the students take a survey ranking the stories, but thus far I've been too lazy to actually work up the data, so I'll be interested to see what they liked best when I get around to it all.

The Enshittification of Netflix

Netflix's DVDs-by-mail service is coming to an end.

Many people out there have reacted to this news by going, "That still exists?" Well yes, it does. I am the last man alive with a Netflix DVD-by-mail account.

My roommate and I first subscribed to Netflix when we were in college. We went in on an account together, and because it was two-at-a-time, we alternated who put what in the queue. He was usually busy over the summer, so over the summer it was all mine: I would binge my way through shows like Veronica Mars and Jeeves and Wooster and The Last Detective and Seven Up. I think it came to an end when I moved in with my parents after college—and soon, of course, Netflix got into the streaming business.

A decade later, shortly after my wife and I moved to Florida, I picked up a subscription again. There's just lots of stuff that is hard to find streaming, or you have to pay money to stream it. Right now the next ten films on my queue are GoldenEye, Be Kind Rewind, the reboot Planet of the Apes trilogy, The Thin Man, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Mouse That Roared, TiMER, and Lady Bird. None of these are available on Netflix streaming. All but one are on Amazon Prime streaming, but all are movies you have to pay $3-4 to rent; we pay $5 per month to get two DVDs a month, so we come out ahead. TiMER doesn't seem to be on any streaming service at all!

Not sure where its red envelope is, to be honest...
Also I am honestly pretty bad about watching movies, so having a physical DVD sitting in front of my tv is a good spur to action. (That said, don't ask me how long my Netflix copy of Logan has been sitting there. I definitely would have saved money if I'd just bought it.)

I listened to an episode of WNYC's podcast On the Media last week where they interviewed Cory Doctorow about a process he calls "enshittification." It's worth a listen, or if you prefer to read, Doctorow explains it in detail in a blog post. Basically it goes like this:

  1. A new platform debuts on the Internet and does something no one else does, and does it really well and gives the user something they needs.
  2. Having locked people in, the new platform then makes things worse for users by selling access to the platform to other businesses. Those businesses have to come because it's where the users are, and the user experience gets worse but the businesses benefit.
  3. Then once the businesses are all there, they get locked in, and now all the benefit accrues to the platform itself... but the thing that initially attracted the user is much worse than it once was.

It's a process Doctorow and host Brooke Gladstone trace across a number of platforms: Amazon, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter. At first Amazon is great, but now it's not... but where else will you go? Facebook was once an essential part of our social lives, but I have basically given up on. Like, I read it everyday still, but there's not much to read, and I've stopped posting because it's clear to me no one else reads what I post. Is that because the algorithm hides it from them or because there's just no one there to read it? Either way, what's the point?

I've been mulling over enshittification a lot since first hearing about it, because it really speaks to my experience as an adult Millennial. It seems to me everything has gotten worse and has made everything else worse. I miss LiveJournal, you know? Where on the Internet of 2023 can you get that sense of community and intimacy? But there was no way to make money from it. LJ gave way to FB which gave way to Twitter which is turning into a platform for white nationalists and contributed directly to the erosion of American democracy. But we were all complicit in this, we all left LiveJournal. Well, or rather as Doctorow explains, Facebook made things easy for us to encourage transition, and then got us all on board, made itself worse.

It dawned on me that the end of Netflix was a clear example of enshittification, and indeed, Doctorow actually discusses this in a Twitter thread. Netflix gave us something no one else has: easy renting, unlimited access to anything that was on DVD. You could easily watch any movie or tv show you wanted on Netflix in the 2000s. But because we all went to Netflix, the video store died, and because we were all on Netflix, they came up with streaming, and because streaming worked out for them, everyone went in on it. And now you can't easily watch any movie or tv show you want: there's no video store, there all on different streaming services, many of them aren't ever even released on DVD anymore, and now as the streaming market collapses, many of them are vanishing from streaming as well. We as consumers made a series of fairly rational choices, and probably the businesses did too in their own way, but I would argue that now we are all worse off.

I read this as part of my ongoing exploration of life-extension technology sf for a class I am eventually going to teach. (As of the time I write this in October 2021, this class has finally been scheduled... for Spring 2024! I guess I have a lot of  time to read prospective texts.) I know of Cory Doctorow, of course, as both an sf writer and a cultural critic, but I have never actually read anything by him before aside from a single short story in a Lou Anders Fast Forward collection, so I was curious to see what I thought. I picked up Walkaway because I had read it was, in part, about mind uploading, and specifically I was intrigued by what I had read, that "[p]art of the process is altering the simulation's mental state into something that will be psychologically okay with being a simulation of a dead person."

This idea is indeed intriguing; unfortunately, you have to read the whole rest of the book in order to read about it. This book starts out okay, but then you soon realize that it's a bunch of people giving other people lectures about what an ideal society looks like, repeat for over 350 pages. It's clearly in dialogue with Le Guin's The Dispossessed... it's clearly also so so inferior to The Dispossessed as a utopian text as to be insulting. I dragged myself through to the end of its relentless mediocrity out of some sense of obligation (it's more a series of novellas than a novel, and maybe I would find that one of them worked on its own in a teachable way), and it took me weeks to do it. The actual society is interesting; the characters and a plot are not. The mind uploading thing is barely even a significant component of the book, and not really relevant thematically. Dull and rambling. I will not be teaching it!
